What is Microdermabrasion?

Smoothing the skin’s surface results in a stimulation of new tissue growth. Microdermabrasion is one of the more popular methods used to remove the outer epidermal layer. This layer of skin is full of dead cells, and it is generally less moisturized than the lower dermal layers. In mature adults, a brittle, uneven epidermis causes the skin to look uneven and discolored. When it is removed, the body responds by producing more collagen. Over time, the new growth results in smoother, less-wrinkled skin.

Microdermabrasion removes the outermost skin layer using a gentle blasting technique. During a typical treatment, tiny sand crystals are sprayed across the skin surface. However, some of the modern instruments used have a diamond-tipped wand. We encourage our clients to learn more about how this simple cosmetic treatment can help restore the skin to its more youthful appearance.

What Microdermabrasion Treats

Superficial age spots and uneven skin tone are the two most common problems treatable through microdermabrasion. Large pores can become clogged, the result being blackheads. Injury scars and acne scars are usually located near the surface and can also be treated with microdermabrasion.

Fine line wrinkles and stretch marks are difficult to eliminate simply by using a moisturizer. Abrasive resurfacing can remove the dead or damaged skin cells and allow for healthier tissue growth. Microdermabrasion also works as an exfoliating treatment because it opens up pores and allows the skin to fully breathe.

What the Treatment Involves

Before we treat a client using microdermabrasion, we schedule a consultation session so that we can examine the facial skin closely. We notice where fine wrinkles are located, measure the depth of the skin and check for clogged pores. If the client is concerned about visible scarring, we look at the injury site and determine whether the scar is superficial. If it is deep within the skin, microdermabrasion might not be effective in reducing the scar’s appearance.

A treatment session lasts for about 45 minutes. There is no need to sedate the client or administer a topical anesthetic. The instrument head is simply placed directly on the skin. The diamond dust scrapes away the epidermis through the rotary action of the wand tip.

Recovery time is very short, and the skin will return to its normal tone the same day. The growth of new skin cells takes up to a month, but positive results may be experienced in just a week or two.
