Dynamic wrinkles are the small, thin lines that form around the mouth, eyes, and on the forehead when the skin is pulled or relaxed through muscle contraction. When we smile or frown, these lines make us look older and even angry, in some cases. Getting rid of these lines is best accomplished through the partial relaxation of the upper-level facial muscles. BOTOX® is a simple cosmetic treatment that results in a smoother facial surface without the need for abrasive resurfacing or skin ablation.
BOTOX® doesn’t treat the skin directly, meaning that it is suitable for all skin types and skin tones. However, we advise our clients to have realistic outcome expectations. When we consult with our clients, we let them know which wrinkles can be smoothed out with this treatment and which ones won’t be affected.
How BOTOX® Works
BOTOX® is an injectable purified protein solution that acts as a nerve signal inhibitor. When injected into the upper-level facial muscles, the nerve signals no longer transmit information to the muscles, and the muscles don’t contract as much as they did prior to treatment.
This means that the individual can still make normal facial expressions, but the skin remains smoother. Dynamic wrinkles no longer appear as prominent as before. BOTOX® won’t treat heavy, set wrinkles, but it will prevent the smaller crow’s feet and smile lines from becoming visible.
During Treatment
BOTOX® is skillfully injected into certain areas during a treatment session. During the consultation, we’ll examine the face closely to determine the exact injection sites. The procedure usually takes only minutes to complete. The results aren’t immediately apparent. In the days following the treatment, however, the client will notice that the muscles are remaining in a more relaxed state.
Some people have concerns about the ability to move the muscles that control the mouth and lips. This is an unfounded rumor. These muscles aren’t affected by the BOTOX® injections, so the individual will notice no change in the ability to contract these deeper-level muscles. In fact, the face won’t even feel numb, another rumor that simply isn’t true.
Advantages of BOTOX® Treatments
This is a popular treatment because it is repeatable, doesn’t involve surgery, and doesn’t require the removal of the skin surface. Abrasive resurfacing and other treatments can actually discolor the skin, so they aren’t suitable for all skin tones and skin textures. BOTOX® treatment carries very little risk of side effects.
