Spider veins are blood vessels that twist and turn in the legs and face. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin because of their blue, red and purple color. While spider veins can be a very painful medical condition, they are also very easy to treat. There are different treatment options that are available at Rao Dermatology. During your consultation, we can create a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy has been the most popular treatment for spider veins since the procedure was created in the 1930s. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a salt solution directly into the problem veins. The salt solution will force the spider veins to disappear gradually over the next four to six weeks. Since this procedure is relatively simple, you will be able to leave our office shortly after the sclerotherapy treatment is completed. Despite the high success rate, sclerotherapy cannot be done if you are pregnant or have regularly suffered from blood clots.
Support Hose and Lifestyle Changes
Wearing compression support stockings is a great way to eliminate spider veins in the legs without having to undergo a major medical procedure. They look like normal hosiery you would wear on your legs, but they fit much tighter to the legs. This tight fit helps blood flow and prevents spider veins from forming. If you want the support hose to be more effective, then you will need to undergo some lifestyle changes too. Losing weight and regular exercise are great ways to reduce the severity of your spider veins.
Laser Treatments
An endovenous laser treatment sends a laser directly into your spider veins. Once the laser is safely inside the spider vein, pulses of light are delivered from the laser. This laser light treatment will cause the spider veins to collapse. Once the veins have collapse, they will no longer be painful or visible through the skin. While endovenous laser treatment is an outpatient procedure, you will have to go under local anesthesia.
